I picked up a bag of Turface MVP today! (2 bags actually) I'm going to test some pings in it to see how they do. I've had mixed results with my current mix.
Some of my pings did amazing like the esseriana but other like ehlersiae have lagged behind.

Muckydoo, could you show us a close-up pic of some Turface granules/particles, maybe on a sheet of white paper for contrast, with a coin for scale? I recently read that ponds in Germany that hosted U. gibba were mostly clay bottomed. Apparently, the gibba there, was mostly absent from peat bottomed ponds. I found that interesting because i've been using peat based substrates with mine and because the Turface is kiln fired clay pellets, it might be worth a try. Seeing is believing though. dvg

Cool, looking forward to seeing what this looks like, before i look for some in the Edmonton area. Can you comment on the granule's texture -smooth or rough? And how dusty is the product out of the bag? Did it require rinsing? Apologies for all the up front questions, but i haven't tried this product before, and it looks very promising for multiple applications. dvg

So, I give it 2 quick rinses but I doubt you really need to.
When I "pack" it into the pots, it says super loose, airy and moist but not soaked.
The neat thing is it really sucks the water up into the pellets. If I give the dry turface a misting of water, it almost instantly vanishes into the clay.
I have some granulated gypsum that I used to bust up some clay in a flower bed and around some shrubs.
I'm going to dissolve some in water and then toss that on the turface, see if it can absorb some of the gypsum!
I got this from a place called Brett Young.
They shipped it out of Calmar AB, not too far outside of Edmonton! You might be able to drive there and pick it up directly!
The local Saskatoon sales guy was awesome!
Really helpful, and not annoyed about me calling about a bag Turface.
Just go to the Brett Young website and look under "Professional Turf & Reclamation" for your local rep.
That's a DIME for reference.... It would have helped if I put it the right side up... Poured directly onto the paper, and as you can see no fine dust to speak of. I found it to be fairly smooth.

Thanks for the great pics Muckydoo - they are very informative. That Turface looks like a good material to experiment with in our potting mixes. Thanks for the link, Calmar is just down the road from me, not far at all. And no worries on showing the heads side up of that coin, i could tell it was a dime, immediately. dvg

No, i'm not that good, my modest observational super-power only allows me to pick out dimes in amongst nickels and quarters. Guess I learned early as a kid, when my dad would offer me the choice between a dime in his one hand or a nickel in the other... ...and for a short while there, i always chose the nickel, because it was bigger. Ah, the teachable moments in life... dvg

Muckydoo, i phoned the Brett Young office/warehouse in Calmar today, and the sales rep there quoted me $30.00 for a 50 lb bag of Turface MVP. I'll be dropping in tomorrow to pick it up. Because of the SARS-CoV-2 that is spreading around, their rep told me that their shop will only be open up until Friday, and then it will be closed up for a while, until the worst has passed. Looking forward to working with this product, thanks again for letting us all know about it. dvg

I'm here now, in Brett Young's parking lot waiting for my bag of turface MVP.
And my cost was $24.50 as well, after GST it came out to $25 .75.
Looking forward to trying this out as an amendment to some of my potting mixes.

Muckydoo, you'll have to let us know how it performs for you in your setup.
I am going to try some in with my U. gibba, to see how it responds to a clay-based bottom for growing in.

So I have some turface sitting in water and I've been testing the TDS levels. They are slowly rising. I did a bit of reading and I guess that's normal. It might take a few soaks and rinses for it to stabilize.

Your mexi-pings should have little trouble growing in Turface, since most of them do well with all mineral mixes.
Please let us know what readings you are observing in the water from the minerals leaching out of the clay-based Turface.
